- An emerald-green variety of grossular garnet, tsavorite is one of the most popular and expensive varieties of garnet.
- Green-Garnet is a calcium aluminum silicate and it belongs to the Grossular and Andradite types of Garnet.
- Two Green-Garnets fall under Grossular; the Grossularite, which is yellow-green in color, and the Tsavorite, which is chrome green in color. The name Grossular is taken from the botanical name of gooseberry, which is‘grossularia’. The color of gooseberries is very similar to the light-green colors of this gemstone.
- Tsavorite was discovered by Scottish geologist Campbell R. Bridges, a consultant for Tiffany & Co. Both deposits in Kenya and in Tanzania were discovered by Bridges, and this new gemstone was first named and marketed to the jewelry industry in 1974
